Listed below are some possible problems the Series I,II & III Land Rover engine may develop and how they may be diagnosed.
Engine does not turn over: Series Land Rovers are blessed with an engine starter handle, but the ignition timing must be accurate in order for the handle to be used effectively. Check for: discharged battery; loose or corroded battery terminal; faulty starter motor or solenoid; battery earth connection broken, loose or corroded; broken, loose or dirty connection in starter circuit wiring; Engine will not start A Series Land Rover has very basically designed electrical connections that are prone to corrosion or working loose. Check for battery not sufficently charged; loose or corroded battery terminal; faulty starter motor or solenoid; battery earth connection loose or corroded; loose or dirty connection in starter circuit wiring; faulty fuel pump; disconnected, damaged or damp ignition leads (P); damp or cracked distributor cap or rotor (P); Incorrect spark plug or contact points gap (P); dirt or water in carburettor (P); faulty choke mechanism (P); air in fuel (D); faulty heater plugs (D); faulty of badly adjusted fuel injectors or distibutor/injector pump (D); injector pump or distributor pump timing incorrect (D); low compression (D). Engine will not idle Leaking air at inlet manifold or carburettor flange (P) due to these being made from light alloy on a Series Land Rover and therefore easily distorted if not installed carefully. Also: leaking head gasket; uneven cylinder compression; faulty contact points, coil, condenser, ignition leads or ignition advance system (P); dirty or incorrectly adjusted carburettor (P); worn distributor cam (P); sticking or incorrecly set valves; incorrectly set idling speed (D); faulty fuel injectors (D); worn timing chain and sprockets; partially blocked exhaust system; engine overheating Engine Misfires Dirt or water in carburettor (P); incorrectly set ignition timing, points gap or spark plug gaps (P); faulty coil, condenser or valve springs (P); worn disributor cam (P); overheating (P). Engine Backfires Air leakage at exahaust joints (P); ignition timing too retarded (P); fuel/air mixture too weak (P); sticking or wrongly adjusted valves; excessively worn valve guides and valves; wrong or incorrctly gapped spark plugs (P). Engine Stalls Leaking air at inlet manifold or carburettor flange (P) due to these being made from light alloy on a Series Land Rover; leaking head gasket; uneven or low cylinder compression; faulty contact points, coil, condenser, ignition leads or ignition advance system (P); dirty or incorrectly adjusted carburettor (P); choke mechanism sticking (P); worn distributor cam (P); sticking or incorrecly set valves; incorrectly set idling speed (D); faulty fuel injectors (D); worn timing chain and sprockets; partially blocked exhaust system; engine overheating; incorrect or wrongly gapped spark plugs (P); Engine Lacks Power A V4 or V6 Series Land Rover engine is not known for it's power output. Low gearing is it's secret of offroad success. Check for: leaking head gasket; uneven or low cylinder compression; faulty coil or condenser (P); Distributor advance mechanism faulty (P); dirty carburettor (P); worn distributor cam (P); sticking or incorrecly set valves; faulty fuel injectors or distibutor/injector pump (D); worn timing chain and sprockets; incorrect or wrongly gapped spark plugs (P); overheating (P); faulty fuel pump; brakes binding; clutch slipping; fuel filler cap air breather blocked; Engine Knocks (caused by pre-ignition of fuel) Faulty spark plugs (P); ignition timing too advanced (P); fuel mixture incorrectly set (P); valve timing incorrect; carbon deposits in cylinder head; Your Land Rover Series I,II or III is smokey Black - choke setting wrong or mixture too rich (P); incorrect injector pump timing or faulty injectors (D) White - water in cylinders from leaking head gasket (engine hot); water in fuel (D); lack of compression. Blue - blocked or overfiled air cleaner; incorrect valve clearances; damaged or missing valve stem oil seals; worn piston rings; faulty fuel injectors or distibutor/injector pump (D (P) - petrol only
