The operation mechanism of the clutch has changed steadily over the life of Series Land Rover design. Early Series I models were fitted with a Rover clutch but this was soon changed for a Borg and Beck version. Mechanical linkage between the clutch operating mechanism and the clutch pedal was first used, but later Series I's were fitted with a hydraulic actuating mechanism. The clutch plate was originally 9inch diameter but was superseded by a 9.5inch version after it was first offered as an option The 9inch clutch plate was fitted to a coil spring actuated pressure plate, whereas the 9.5inch was fitted with a diaphragm type spring. The 9ichn clutch plate can be replaced with the 9.5inch version on the same flywheel, but the diaphragm style pressure plate must used instead of the coil spring version. All Series III models were fitted with the diaphragm clutch.
The Series III models have a self-adjusting clutch actuating rod mechanism but earlier hydraulic systems have to be adjusted manually to allow for clutch plate wear.
